Family Sketch

We are Nick and Becky. We are both 31 years old and have been married for seven years. We adopted our daughter, Lya, from Vietnam in 2008. Lya is two years old and full of energy. She keeps us laughing and amazes us each day.

Ten years ago we were introduced by a mutual friend. While our relationship did not begin romantically, we had a natural connection, and within a few months we began dating. One fun fact from our past is that we had actually met long before our introduction in college. Our parents spent a few years doing voluntary service together in New York before having children. Years later when they reconnected, we played together as kids. Neither of us remembers the event, but Nick’s mother recalls how welcoming Becky and her brother were to Nick and his siblings. It was more than twelve years before we’d meet again. We dated for three years before getting married in 2003.

Nick is currently pursuing a career in Building Science and Solar Technology. In his free time he enjoys playing upright bass in an eclectic, three-piece band. He has endless energy for fixing things and improving our home. Nick is a talented carpenter and has a great mind for problem-solving. Whenever our friends have a house project, they call Nick for help and advice or sometimes just to borrow his tools. Nick grew up in a family who loved to play music together, and he loves to share that with Lya now. Nearly every night they get out the guitar and ukulele to play Lya’s favorite songs before heading upstairs to read books before bed. Nick has incredible patience for allowing Lya to “help” with many of the household chores. He is naturally good with children, and no one can get a belly laugh from Lya like her daddy.

Becky is a stay-at-home mother. Prior to being home with Lya, Becky worked for a non-profit youth organization managing an arts-integration program. In addition to being a full-time parent, she enjoys photography, sewing, and other creative projects. While her love of photography began in high school, her passion reignited when she became a mother. She loves to practice, read, and learn about photography, and from time to time she is even paid to do what she loves. In addition to photography, Becky is usually working on a few quilts or other small sewing projects. She often creates handmade gifts for family and friends and enjoys collaborating with Lya, as well. Lya has her own corner in Becky’s studio where she colors, paints, and plays with fabric when she’s not “assisting” with one of her mom’s projects. Becky also enjoys stained glass, book arts, reading, and gardening.

Lya joined our family in September of 2008 when she was 7 months old. She has been an incredible blessing in our lives, and the amount of joy and laughter that spills from her daily is contagious. At two years old, she is bright, determined, and funny. She loves books and music, and we spend a lot of our days singing, reading, and playing games of pretend. Lya will be an amazing big sister. She is very aware of other children and how they are feeling. On one occasion another little boy was very upset and crying. Lya suggested that maybe he would feel better if he sat on Becky’s lap. She is sweet, sympathetic, and always willing to share.

Together we like to play outside, garden in our backyard, and go hiking. We love to travel and host family and friends at our home. In the summer, we enjoy evenings in the park, summer music festivals, and time on the Chesapeake Bay. We love building new family memories and traditions.

Birthmother/Birthfather Letter

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our profile and to learn more about us. Although we do not know the circumstances that have led you to consider adoption, we hope that you find peace as you make this important decision for yourself and your child.

While dating, we discussed the possibility of adopting someday. At the time, we did not know that we would be unable to have children biologically. Even though it has not been easy, we both feel blessed by our journey in the ways it has allowed us to grow as individuals and because adoption truly seems like the right fit for our family.

As partners and parents, we come from similar family backgrounds that allow us to share common values and goals in life. Our faith leads us to live a life of compassion, humility, and respect for all people and for the world around us. We look forward to welcoming a second child into our family and nurturing them with these same values, offering them a lifetime of support and unconditional love. Thank you for considering us as a part of your journey.

Blessings,

Nick and Becky
