Detailed Description of Independent Adoption Services
Independent Adoption Placements
An Independent Adoption is one where the adoptive parents develop an adoption plan with the birthparent(s) independently of an adoption agency. The birthparent(s) still must have the benefit of counseling regarding the adoption, which AAA can provide. Even if the adoption plan is originally developed independently, if the adoptive family or birthparent(s) wants to do the adoption as an "Agency Adoption" with the added services, this is an option.
An Independent Adoption requires that a Pre-Placement Study be done on the adoptive family prior to the placement of the baby in the home. The Pre-Placement Study process begins if an application is returned, reviewed, and approved. It is completed in 4 steps, as follows:
Once an application is returned, it is reviewed. If the application is approved, the next part in the process is the Pre-Placement Study. This is completed in 4 steps.
1. Adoptive Parent Orientation-
It is a working session at which the documentation required for the Pre-Placement Study is initiated or completed. It is also an orientation to the adoption process and to what to expect as the process unfolds. The first payment of the Pre-Placement Study fee is required at the time of the orientation.
2. Home Inspection and Family Visit-
This appointment is scheduled only after all the paperwork given at orientation is completed and turned back in to AAA. The caseworker visits the home and checks for safety concerns. It is a time for getting aquainted with the couple and their children, if any. The second payment of the Pre-Placement Study fee is required at the time of this visit.
3. Individual Interviews-
This is an interview with each member of the couple. This appointment usually takes place at Adoption Assistance Agency's office.
4. Couple Interview-
This appointment usually takes place at the Agency. The final payment of your Pre-Placement Study will be required when a final copy of your Pre-Placement Study is drawn up.
If your Pre-Placement Study results in approval for adoption, the attorney you retain to file your adoption with the court will need to file your Pre-Placement Study with the court a minimum of 30 days prior to the anticipated birth or placement of the child. Once the court grants approval of the adoption, a placement order will be granted allowing the legal placement of the child in the adoptive family.
Fee Sheets available upon request.
