Agency Adoption Placements
An "Agency Adoption" is a full-service adoption, in which we provide all the necessary adoptive parent, and birthparent services. We work with families within New Mexico, as well as all throughout the United States. (However if you are an out-of-state family, you will have to get your Pre-Placement Study done in the state where you live, and then sent to our agency upon completion.) It will be reviewed for compliance to New Mexico requirements as well.
Since we are a small, non-profit agency, our board of directors has narrowed our scope to only working with married couples. We are sorry if that does not meet your need, but we would be happy to refer you to another agency that can.
In deciding whether or not to work with our Agency, we can then send you out a packet of information to look over, which would include an agency brochure, fee sheet, and application packet. Once an application is returned, it is reviewed. If the application is approved, the next part in the process is the Pre-Placement Study. This is completed in 4 steps.
1. Adoptive Parent Orientation-
It is a working session at which the documentation required for the Pre-Placement Study is initiated or completed. It is also an orientation to the adoption process and to what to expect as the process unfolds. The first payment of the Pre-Placement Study fee is required at the time of the orientation.
2. Home Inspection and Family Visit-
This appointment is scheduled only after all the paperwork given at orientation is completed and turned back in to AAA. The caseworker visits the home and checks for safety concerns. It is a time for getting aquainted with the couple and their children, if any. The second payment of the Pre-Placement Study fee is required at the time of this visit.
3. Individual Interviews-
This is an interview with each member of the couple. This appointment usually takes place at Adoption Assistance Agency's office.
4. Couple Interview-
This appointment usually takes place at the Agency. The final payment of your Pre-Placement Study will be required when a final copy of your Pre-Placement Study is drawn up.
If your Pre-Placement Study results in approval for adoption, you will submit a photo album and enter the "waiting period". The Listing Fee will be due upon verbal approval of your Pre-Placement Study. During this time your album will be shown to appropriate prospective birthparents. This is a very hard time, as it could take only days to be matched or it may take many months of waiting. The average time is approximately 14 months from the time your Pre-Placement Study is completed. It is very unpredictable, although we can help you by giving you some ideas and suggestions along the way. Feel free to call with further questions on this matter.
Once you do get matched with a birthmother our Birthparent Expense Fee is due. This may also be a time of waiting if your birthmother is not far along in her pregnancy. Our caseworkers will be with you every step of the way providing you with full disclosure and helping you as you prepare for parenthood! Once the baby is born, placement occurs. The Placement fee will be due at the time the baby is placed with your family. During this time the birthparents will also go through the process of relinquishing their rights, and if the birthfather is not in the picture then we will search for him at this point as well. At this point you will need to get an attorney. The attorney will file all the necessary paperwork with the courts in order to get your adoption petition filed and your adoption finalized. Post Placement visits will occur up until finalization and a report to the court will be generated.
